ANTIQUE PHOTOGRAPH GEM TINTYPE / FEROTYPE-Lovely Older Woman This ANTIQUE TIN/FEROTYPE PHOTOGRAPH is of an OLDER LADY.

Our research/resource indicates due to the SMALL SIZE, CHOCOLATE COLORING, and CASUAL BACKGROUND that this PHOTOGRAPH is a considered to be a GEM TINTYPE / FEROTYPE and dates between 1870 and 1885.

It is surrounded by a BEAUTIFUL COPPER or BRASS Ferotype preserver. The preserver has a FLORAL DESIGN in all 4 CORNERS and a ROPE DESIGN all along the edge.

A BIT of HISTORICAL INFORMATION:
The form of tintype (also referred to as ferotype or sometimes melainotype) known as a "gem" is a small photographic image usually anywhere from 3/4" to 1" wide and 1¼" high made possible by the use of a multi-lens camera with repeating back which therefore could produce multiple exposures on a single photographic plate.

In terms of quantity, the gem was the most prolifically produced form of photograph in the 1860s in America. Aside from the speed of its production, the gem was also inexpensive and its small size made it suitable for mounting in jewellery such as lockets and broaches.

Like daguerreotypes and ambrotypes before it, hand colouring was also possible and rouging of the subject's cheeks was the most common form of this.

The ferotype, also called the melainotype or tintype, was America's first major contribution to the art of photography. It superceeded the ambrotype by the end of the Civil War and went on to become 19th-Century America's favorite quick picture. It was made the same way as the ambrotype, except that a thin piece of black enameled, or japanned, iron was used in place of glass. Like the ambrotype, the image is reversed. Ferotypes were made from THUMBNAIL SIZE to as large as 11 x 14. With the introduction of multilensed cameras with sliding backs in the early 1860's, the more typical small sizes were made in volume. These were usually mounted in card mounts of the then popular cart-de-vista size. Made on a metal plate and with a varnished surface, ferotypes have proven very durable.

The CONDITION of this listing is ANTIQUE / USED. It is slightly faded. The COPPER / BRASS MATT is in wonderful condition for its age.

This photograph was found in the SHAKER SEWING CASE that we sold on a separate listing.

******************************************************************************************
A bit of History about ATLANTIC CITY and the ROLLING CHAIR:
On June 26, 1870, the first section of the Atlantic City Boardwalk opened along the New Jersey beach. Dr. Jonathan Pitney and civil engineer Richard Osborne began developing the area on Absecon Island in 1850. Long before this time though, the Lenni-Lenape tribe were the first seasonal visitors to enjoy the summer splendor of the island.
Beautiful beaches, fresh sea air, luxurious hotels, fine restaurants, alluring shops, and a connecting railroad line from Camden, New Jersey drew visitors from all over the world. Atlantic City soon became a popular summer resort and winter health spa.
Alexander Boardman, a railroad conductor, conceived the idea of constructing a boardwalk as a means of keeping sand out of the railroad cars and hotels. The city used its tax revenues to build an eight-foot-wide temporary wooden walkway from the beach into town which could be dismantled during the winter.

The rolling chair, introduced in 1884, was the only vehicle allowed on the Boardwalk.
