ANTIQUE ELGIN NATIONAL WATCH COMPANY POCKET WATCH Our research/resource provides the following information about this pocket watch that has the Serial #4121436:
Year Elgin produced - 1890
The serial number of this watch indicates that it was 1 of 5000 produced within that year.
Grade - 96
Size - 18s
Jewels - 7

Our research/resource indicates that this is an ANTIQUE POCKET WATCH made by the ELGIN NATIONAL WATCH COMPANY in 1890 making it one of the earlier TIME PIECES that was manufactured within the companies first 25 years.

The POCKET WATCH is COMPLETE. It features a GOLD PLATED LIBERTY CASE.

The CENTER of the FRONT of the CASE has a ENGRAVED DESIGN of a SHIELD surrounded by a SCROLLS and could be engraved with your INITIALS if you choose.

The BACK of the CASE has a ENGRAVED DESIGN of a CLUSTER of FLOWERS.

The EDGE of the case is also engraved with a FLORAL and SCROLL DESIGN all the way around the entire circumference.

The CONDITION is VERY GOOD. This an ANTIQUE POCKET WATCH. It has been professionally reworked and polished and it keeps good time. The case is polished and has a radiant sheen. The case shows minimal wear of the GOLD PLATING and there are some surface scratches. The engraving on the front of the case shows more wear than the engraving on the back.

A Bit of History.....
Elgin was founded in 1864, right as the civil war was coming to an end.

The first watch Elgin made, an 18 sized B W Raymond railroad grade watch, was finished in 1867 and over the next 100 years, they went on to produce about 60 million watches.

Elgin produced their first wristwatch around 1910, leading most other American watch companies by many years.

Elgin was originally called the National Watch Company. The name never really stuck and in 1874, they changed their name to the Elgin National Watch Company because most of the watch trade and public were calling them watches from Elgin. They kept that name until the late 1960s when they stopped producing watches and changed their name to the Elgin National Industries.

PLEASE NOTE: This pocket watch will need to be maintained over the years so that it will provide you with accurate timekeeping. We cannot guarantee how long it will keep running.

PLEASE NOTE:
THE CASED PHOTOGRAPH USED IN THIS LISTING was used as a PROP for MARKETING PURPOSES ONLY and has NO RELATIONSHIP to the ELGIN WATCH COMPANY.
Condition: USED
Size: 18s - 7 JEWELS / Diameter of Case - 2 1/8 inches

ANTIQUE SETH THOMAS BLACK MANTEL ADAMANTINE CLOCK This wonderful piece of historical time keeping is called a BLACK MANTLE ADAMANTINE CLOCK. It was made by the SETH THOMAS CLOCK COMPANY and is date stamped 1897 on the bottom.
***************************************
About the manufacture:
Seth Thomas made these types of mantle clocks as early as the 1880s in marble and iron cases, and ADAMANTINE VENEER over wood. The clocks were finished in black enamel.

ADAMANTINE VENEER was developed by the CELLULOID MANUFACTURING COMPANY of NEW YORK CITY and was covered by U.S. PATENT NUMBER 232,037, dated SEPTEMBER 7th, 1880. The SETH THOMAS CLOCK COMPANY purchased the right to use the ADAMANTINE VENEER in 1881.
***************************************
This clock is made of wood and ADAMANTINE VENEER. It is a CELLULOID VENEER that was glued to the wood case. ADAMANTINE VENEER was made in black and white, and in colored patterns such as wood grain, onyx, and marble.

The PRIMARY COLOR of this clock is BLACK. The TOP of this clock is a WARM ORANGE MARBLE-LIKE COLOR. There is ONE WARM ORANGE MARBLE-LIKE COLORED HALF PILLAR on either side of the clocks face. The BASE of the clock is TRIMMED along the PLATFORM in the ORANGE MARBLE-LIKE COLOR also. The clock has BRASS LION HEAD HANDLES and BRASS FEET.
***************************************
CONDITION of the CLOCK:
The clock is ANTIQUE and is in working condition and it keeps good time.

The clock has an Original Seth Thomas movement that is an 8 day time & strike; meaning it strikes a bell on the half-hour once & gongs to each & every hour on the hour, with a deep cathedral sounding gong.

The clock has a METAL BACK SWING PLATE on the back that closes off the opening to the workings of the clock.

About 95% of the SETH THOMAS LABEL is intact and present on the back and it is still legible.

A KEY and a pendulum wieght is included in the purchase of this clock.

The CONDITION is ESTATE / USED. There are some imperfections. There are two dents on the upper top edge of the rim. The clocks face is slightly discolored due to the age of the clock. Dates are written on the back by indicating when this clock was repaired or reworked.

WE ARE NOT THE ORIGINAL OWNERS and HAVE NOT had the clock serviced or reworked.

We believe that all of the parts are original but because we are not in the clock repair business we CANNOT GUARANTEE that all of the parts are original.

You are buying this clock in AS-IS / AS-FOUND CONDITION. We personally have not had this clock inspected by a reputable clock repair service. We cannot guarantee that this clock will continue to run.

To preserve the beauty / history of this antique clock We recommend that at some point the purchaser have the clock inspected and cleaned and/or reworked by a reputable clock repair shop.
